Live Streaming a Whiteboard Session

You can use the Screen Capture tool to broadcast your screen to selected streaming services. The Screen Capture Tool is available in Whiteboard for Windows, in both whiteboard and Windows mode (i.e. when displaying the whiteboard area and also when displaying the Windows desktop).


Supported Streaming Services

Whiteboard supports streaming to the following services:

Prerequisites

Verify that you meet the following requirements before streaming:

  • A streaming account that is already enabled for streaming. Some services like YouTube may take up to 24 hours after the initial request before enabling streaming.
  • The latest version of Whiteboard for Windows already open and running.
  • You are already logged into Whiteboard for Windows.
  • An environment with good network speed.


Streaming on YouTube

The following sections will demonstrate how to live stream a Whiteboard for Windows session using YouTube. Since the procedure requires you to switch between YouTube and Whiteboard for Windows, sections have been marked as needed.

How to use YouTube to live stream your myViewBoard for Windows session.



▘Get a YouTube stream key and URL



On YouTube
Before starting to stream, you need to know your stream key and the stream URL first. These information are provided by YouTube.


  1. Open your browser and sign in to https://YouTube.com
  2. Once signed in, click on the upper right corner.
  3. From the drop down, click Go Live.
  4. On top of the next screen, select STREAM.
  5. On the new Window, provide following information:
    • Title
    • Publish Option (Public, Unlisted or Private)
    • Audience Options
    • Optional
    - Description
    - Category
    - Schedule for later
    - Upload Custom Thumbnail
    - Age restriction
  6. Click Create Stream.
  7. After a few seconds, YouTube provides a unique stream key and the stream URL. Read the instructions provided on the Stream setup help dialog.


Before clicking Done, head over to your Whiteboard for Windows to input stream key and the stream URL. Keep the YouTube window open at all times.

On Whiteboard for Windows
Once you have the stream key and URL, head back to Whiteboard for Windows and sign in. To start the stream, perform the following:


  1. Click I-screen-capture-entire-screen.svg on the main toolbar to open the Screen Capture tool.
  2. Click I-screen-capture-video-recording.svg to open the recording/streaming menu.
  3. Click Streaming.svg the stream icon on the Recording toolbar.
  4. Click I-check-mark-black.svg after selecting your desired video resolution.
  5. Provide the following:
    • Stream Key - Log in to your streaming service to find your unique streaming key.
    • Stream URL - The stream URL for your platform (see above).
    - Note: If YouTube provides you with a URL containing rtmp, make sure to change it to rtmps to successfully livestream (e.g. rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2).
  6. (Optional) Select the "Record the stream" checkbox to record a copy of the stream to your local drive.




▘Start streaming your session



On YouTube
Now that Whiteboard for Windows is communicating with YouTube, switch back to the YouTube browser window to start the streaming process:


  1. Click Done if you haven't done so yet.
  2. Click Go Live.
  3. Click to distribute the link to your audience.
  4. Everybody who opens your link can view your Whiteboard Session.


You can also invite people to your own YouTube channel so that anyone who visits your channel can view the stream.

No further action is needed.

Head over to Whiteboard for Windows and start presenting.


Ending your live stream



On YouTube
After the presentation is done, end the session by performing the following:


  1. Click End Stream.
  2. On the popup, click End.
  3. YouTube shows a summary of your streaming session:

Streaming on Facebook

The following sections will demonstrate how to live stream a Whiteboard for Windows session using Facebook. Since the procedure requires you to switch between Facebook and Whiteboard for Windows, sections have been marked as needed.

Get a Facebook stream key and URL



On Facebook
Before starting to stream, you need to know your stream key and the stream URL first. These information are provided by Facebook.


  1. Open your browser and sign in to http://Facebook.com.
  2. On the Create Post box, click the Live Video option. This should take you to the Live Producer screen.
  3. On the Stream Setup tab, select Use stream keys under the Get Started section.
  4. Under the Live API section, note the Server URL and Stream Key information.

Once you have the stream key and URL, head back to Whiteboard for Windows. To start the stream, perform the following:


  1. Click I-screen-capture-entire-screen.svg on the main toolbar to open the Screen Capture tool.
  2. Click I-screen-capture-video-recording.svg to open the recording/streaming menu.
  3. Click Streaming.svg the stream icon on the Recording toolbar.

▘Start streaming your session



On Facebook
Facebook automatically displays a live video feed of your screen once the connection is successful. To start streaming to your audience, perform the following:


  1. On the left panel, you can optionally specify the following:
    • Go live now, or schedule a live video
    • Share to your timeline, to a page, or a group
    • Specify a title and a short description
  2. On the Stream Setup tab, configure additional stream options under the Settings section.
  3. Click Go Live once you are satisfied with your setup.
  4. Streaming starts immediately. Invite people to visit your Facebook timeline/page/group to view your live stream.

▘Ending your live stream



On Facebook
After the presentation is done, click End Live Video to end the session.

Viewing the stream after the session

  • Facebook saves the session as a post in the teacher's timeline.
  • YouTube saves the session as a video in the teacher's channel.
  • If you selected the Record the stream checkbox before streaming, you can save the video to a local or cloud drive. You can upload/share this video to a cloud drive account and distribute to your students.


Using Streaming for Distance Learning
